Kitty’s Top 10 Favorite Anime Openings

(I don’t own any of the art that is featured in this post)

There are SOOO many to choose from and it was hard to decide where I wanted to put each one, but this is my list so far…

I have not seen all of these anime series, but just from the openings they look pretty impressive. I don’t know about anyone else, but the openings will greatly influence my overall opinion of the series, especially if it is a shorter anime. In addition, the opening sets the tone for series.

Anyway, here we go!

This post may contain spoilers so read at your own risk!

10. Naruto Shippuden Season 3: “Blue Bird” by Ikimono-gakari

I guess I don’t have to summarize Naruto. I like all the openings for this series, but this is my favorite because it’s fast-paced and the song is my favorite of the whole series.

9. Vinland Saga Season 1: “MUKANJYO” by Survive Said The Prophet

  1. Thorfinn is seeking to avenge his father’s death by dueling with the man who killed his father. He ends up fighting alongside the same man and earns a title as a feared warrior.
  2. Survive Said The Prophet has done a lot of opening songs and this one is no less iconic!

8. Code Geass Season 1: “Colors” by FLOW

Lelouch uses his Geass ability as well as his skill in strategizing to save his country of Japan from the Empire of Britannia. In the process he becomes a symbol of hope for his fellow Japanese. He encounters many moral dilemmas and personal hardships.

“Colors” summarizes the anime perfectly! It displays Lelouch’s determination to free his country and save those close to him.

7. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1: “Kaikai Kitan” by Eve

I have not seen this anime yet but the song and visuals are epic!

6. Tokyo Ghoul Season 1: “unravel” by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure

Tokyo Ghoul takes place in a world where ghouls (beings who look human but have an appetite for human flesh) exist and terrorize Tokyo. The story centers on Ken Kaneki who is half-human, half-ghoul, and shows his lifestyle as he tries to maintain his humanity while living in the ghouls’ society. The show questions the meaning of “humanity” as well as how far people will go to attain power. I like this anime because it is dark, has some horror elements, and the visuals are very well done.

In season 1’s opening the song and the visuals show a picture of the character Ken Kaneki: he reaches his breaking point and then steps past that point to discover that he is much stronger than he thought.

5. Death Note Season 1: “the WORLD” by Nightmare

Death Note is the perfect anime for anyone new to the genre. The story follows Light who is given the ability to erase anyone he wishes from the earth by simply writing their name in a notebook. He uses his ability to destroy all the criminals in his city so crime will end. In the process he creates a persona for himself known as “Kira.” A genius detective, known as L, starts an investigation to hunt down “Kira.” The story gets more and more intense as the show progresses.

This anime makes the audience question the morality of some characters: if what they are doing is right because they have good intentions. Like so many good anime, Death Note is worth a couple rewatches.

4. Cowboy Bebop: “Tank!” by Seatbelts

Cowboy Bebop is about a bounty hunter crew who find work wherever they are able to and run into all sorts of adventures. It mixes together the elements of space cowboys, film noir, jazz, crime and space thriller.

This anime is amazing! The artwork is incredible, the story is engaging, and the soundtrack is great. The world building is on another level and each of the characters are 3 dimensional. The opening is no exception, it helps set the tone for the anime. The show seems all over the place, but everything just fits together so nicely to make it charming and extremely engaging. There are also some deep messages throughout that I discover each time I watch it or hear people discuss it. It’s definitely worth a watch.

3. Fruits Basket (2019) Season 3: “Pleasure” by WARPs UP

  1. After Tohru is invited into the Sohma’s home she discovers that the family is trapped in a curse where they turn into an animal according to their zodiac. Out of the kindness, Tohru intends to free the members from this curse. There are many characters in this anime, each is unique and memorable.
  2. I could listen to this song on repeat because it that good! The first time I watched the opening for season 3 I was truly shocked. The animation style was slightly different than the previous seasons. I am not an animation expert, or even an artist, but to me the style appeared smoother.

  1. 2. The Promised Neverland Season 1: “Touch Off” by UVERworld

  1. The Promised Neverland is the story about children trapped in an orphanage and under the care of “Mom.” They soon discover the nefarious schemes going on outside of the orphanage and so devise a plan to escape. This anime has adventure, fantasy and is fast-paced.

“Touch off”‘s theme is the feeling of captivity and feeling helpless. The song is mainly told from Ray’s perspective because he chose to burn down Grace Field House and the word “fire” is repeated throughout. Also, there is the phrase “The things I want to forget they can never be forgotten” telling of Ray’s memories of Isabella and the horrible things she has done.

  1. 1. Attack on Titan Season 2: “Shinzou wo Sasageyo!” by Linked Horizon
See the source image

Attack on Titan tells the story of a city trapped inside walls to protect them against man-eating titans. The story focuses on Eren Jaeger, a young boy who has ambitions to kill every titan. That’s just a sliver of the description of the whole show. It is super impressive, and I recommend watching it for those who have not seen it.

This opening gives me goosebumps each time I watch it! All the openings are iconic, but my favorite is season 2 because the song is super epic. The visuals add a lot to the experience, as with most openings. The animation features the main characters preparing for battle. Eren wears the key necklace given to him by his father, Mikasa has her signature red scarf, Hange her glasses, and Levi ties his white ascot. The titans are shown alternatively in clips throughout, representing the danger they present to humanity. As with all good anime openings, this one draws the viewer in and makes them invested in the show.

  1. That’s a great list you have there. All the openings are iconic and man, I simply love all of them. I loved Shinzou wo Sasageyo for so long but then My War came out… And now there’s Rumbling (if that’s the title, kinda forgot lol) but in the context of what Attack on Titan represents, it will forever be the most iconic one (even among those who are not fans hehe)

    1. I agree! They are all so good, it is so hard to choose a favorite! Every time a new season comes out the song is iconic!

  2. Hi,Dear nice to meet you i am Harold martha pleaseI know that it looks strange to contact whom you dont know, but i plead for your respond to my privet Email, (Haroldmartha35@gmail.com)so that we can exchange ideas for reasons

      1. It’s one of my favs. Fate Zero and Fate Stay Night/Unlimited Blade Works are the two most worth watching, IMO. I haven’t yet seen Heaven’s Feel. Though I really want to — as I’m very interested in the character of Sakura. Would love to hear your thoughts on these.

  3. Great picks! This reminds me of my old anime playlists from back when I was still cosplaying.

No. 8: FLOW interestingly did “World End”, one of the openings from Code Geass R2. Not really much a fan of the band’s songs for Naruto, but the one they did for Eureka Seven (DAYS) is amazing to listen to — with the violins accompaniment and all.

No. 2: You can never go wrong with UVERworld when it comes to opening themes! “Colors of the Heart” from Blood+ is among their best.

    1. Thank you! Oooh I might have heard “Colors of the Heart” before but I don’t remember, I’ll check out their other songs too. “World End” is epic! They did a good job on that one!
